Top Returning XC Teams by Class (2009 CPU Rankings)

It's just one more week before we are underway with the competitive cross country season! So before we get the official FACA Pollster Pre-season rankings next Wednesday, I figured that I would post the database's computer rankings from the end of 2009 season (with a few transfers accounted for) to see where many of the teams stand. This should be able to give many teams a general idea as to where they stack up in the state, and which teams to look out for! Rankings inside...

FITniche Contest: And the winner is....

The winner of choice of free shoes at FITniche is.... Hope LaFrazia! The runners up in the competition that will receive free one-year subscriptions to flrunners.com are: Daniel Moore and Ryan Pulsifer. Congratulations and thank you guys for entering our this contest experiment.  Based on the fact that not many people actually bothered to enter the odds were pretty good... and not sure we'll try this experiment again or not.  You others don't like free stuff or something?!  Or was it just because it was before the season and traffic was low?!

Davidson Opens XC Season with 18:28

The 2010 cross country season is now "officially" underway with the first preseason meet results entered.  And Shelby Davidson of Cocoa Beach, sister of Tyler Davidson, didn't waste any time giving us something to be excited about!  In her first junior outing she crushed her own pervious PR of 19:35 by over a minute with an 18:28 course record.  Though no team scores were kept, Davidson lead an impressive victory for the Cocoa Beach girls.  On the guy's side it was Timber Creek going 1-2-3 with Nathan Nichols up front in 17:00.  Complete results are now poted.

Nike Patents Marty McFly’s Self-Lacing Sneaker

Remember the McFly 2015s, the Official Shoes of Gadget Lab? They were a fairly faithful rendition of Marty McFly’s amazing self-lacing sneakers from Back to the Future 2, forced to the market by the tireless work of the Maloof brothers who spent years badgering Nike into making them. That Nike has filed a patent for these things is mind-bending enough, but pretty much everything has made it in. (via Wired Gadget Lab)

New FLR11 Course Map

Check out the beautiful new course map that Robert Brown just sent me!  I didn't even ask him to do it, but I love it... this is perfect if you want to print something out.  Robert is a t-shirt designer near Ft. Myers and does a lot of the work for meets down there.  He can hook you up with a map and/or some shirts for your meet (his designs are out of this world and good prices to).  Check out his shiny new web site.  And click on this article for a larger, printable view of the map.

Gaither Wins Silver in Singapore

Kissimmee Osceola High School senior-to-be, Tynia Gaither, earned the silver medal at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Sunday.  Representing her native The Bahamas, she ran a 23.68 in the finals of the 200 meter dash (just off her PR) to take second behind Nkiruka Florence Nwakwe of Nigeria.  Gaither has had quite a season on the international track & field scene this year, running as one of The Bahamas biggest stars and future Olympic prospects in meets like The Bahamas Nationals and the CARIFTA Games.

Robin Reynolds Wins Youth Olympic Gold!

You couldn't ask for more than Robin Reynolds gave Team USA fans at the Youth Olympics in Singapore.  After qualifying as the #2 seed out of the prelims earlier in the week, Reynolds left golden and wearing the stars and stripes!  Her gold-medal winning time in the 400 meter dash: a new huge PR of 52.57!  That is four-tenths faster than any other high schooler in the nation this year.  What redemption for a young lady whose regular season was plagued with injury!  This is the first annual Youth Olympic Games, sponsored by the International Olympic Committee and is the 14-18 year old equivalent of the real deal.  Reynolds is entering her junior year at Miami Jackson so we've got two years more of seeing her shine as the nation's #1 single-lapper.

Shaquille O'Neal vs. Tyson Gay

In a press release today from the USATF it was announced that ABC is starting a new TV series called "Shaq VS" where NBA star Shaquille O'Neal will battle other celebrities in their area of expertise.  So one such challenge is going to air on August 17 at 9PM and will face Shaq off in a 200 meter race against Tyson Gay.  So... it's pretty cool I guess to put a track star in front of a mainstream audience, but.... really?  Like okay potentially Shaq could make a better tasting burger than Rachel Ray, but I mean Tyson Gay will have time to eat that burger by the time Shaq gets to the finish.  I guess it's all about the ratings so it doesn't matter!

Florida Middle School XC Championship Venue Announced

The Florida Youth Running Association (FLYRA) has announced that the first ever Florida Middle School XC Championship will be held at a never-before-used cross country course:  the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.  I toured this venue years ago as a potential host for the flrunners.com Invitaitonal and, though it didn't work for us, always thought it would be an exceptional place for a cross country meet--especially for a shorter race.  So it is exciting to finally see that happen!
