Regional Championship Week Highlights

Brian Atkinson, fresh off his Duke University commitment announcement, threw down a huge performance at his regional meet at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville.  He won big, over 30 seconds in front of teammate Erik Fagan, with a huge course record--25 seconds faster than the old record held by Jeremy Criscione of UF--with a time of 15:15.  His splits were 4:42 and 9:42, according to Ricky Quintana.  Full results and coverage links inside this article.

Fluehr Twins 1-2 Again: 17:01.99, 17:17.16 @ 1A Region 3

Kathryn and Erika again went 1-2, as they have in every single meet so far this season, with impressive national-level times (17:01.99 and 17:17.16).  This is just off Kathryn's personal best from flrunners 10 and a new PR by 7 seconds for Erika.  Emily Edwards of Canterbury was in third place, about 1:10 back from Erika.

Atkinson to be a Blue Devil

Brian Atkinson proclaimed to the world tonight on his Facebook page that he's going to be a Duke Blue Devil!  There seems to be a Florida connection in the works with prestigious Duke University.  Last year the state's top two girls commited to Duke--former Footlocker national champ Ashley Brasovan of Wellington and Footlocker finalist Kayla Hale of Holy Trinity--and now Great American champion Brian Atkinson of Melbourne.  We'll reach out to Brian to get some more details on his decision, but congrats to him!

Five Star Conference Summary

Cross country is practiced by the freest of spirits. Nowhere is that more evident than in the 5 Star Conference.  Comprised of nine teams from Volusia and Flagler Counties, its athletes come in contact with each other on an almost weekly basis.  In between formal events, such as beach runs, multi-team meets, the Deland Invitational, and two levels of conference championships, there is contact by Facebook, e-mails, and even some budding romances…although I have no personal knowledge of the latter. The result has become a giant web of friendships that radiate outwards, beyond their respective high schools, and even transcend the season.

Okaloosa County Championship Summary

The course at Timberlake, which is a combination of clay and wooded trails and some small hills, was a familiar one to all the runners. It was a chilly, windy morning, but luckily the rain held off during the event. Earlier showers left the course damp, but not too muddy. The only rough area runners commented on was around the two mile mark where conditions were somewhat slippery. Participating teams included Baker High School, Choctaw High School, Crestview High School, Fort Walton Beach High School, Niceville High School, and Rocky Bayou School. Unfortunately, this is another course where spectators can only watch the start and the finish. Anxious parents and coaches lined up along the finish area waiting for the first sightings of their runners.

Panhandle Championship Meet Summary

Teams arrived Saturday for the 20th annual Panhandle Championships dressed in sweat suits, ski caps, and some wrapped in blankets trying to keep warm. But, the chilly temps seemed to have little effect on the runners as they were all looking for a chance at the Panhandle Champion title. Over 700 participants were registered, including six middle school teams. The course was in excellent condition according race director and Marianna High School coach Allan Gibson. Despite the previous day's rain, there were hardly any muddy areas to slow runners down. In fact, a course record was broken in the Varsity Girls race.

Edgewater Invitational Meet Summary

A Friday night meet, especially this late in the season, can have its drawbacks, as well as its advantages. No doubt having the entire weekend to train--or rest, as the case may be--just prior to the various conference championships will win its share of supporters (explaining why this was one of two such events in the Orlando area alone). It might be considered the last regular season workout, both for varsity and non-varsity athletes, so times would be weighed more as a level of preparation for the championship “season,” than strictly as a performance.
